Qualifying Health Questions for Supplemental Insurance:

If you are not in the Guaranteed Issue period for Medicare Supplemental Insurance Policies then you must answer health related questions. Each Medicare Supplement provider has its own questions to qualify for a supplement policy, although they tend to be very similar. Some examples of questions that you will be asked to qualify for a supplement policy are:

  • Are you currently hospitalized or have you been hospitalized 2 or more times in the past 12 months?
  • Have you been diagnosed or treated for: emphysema, COPD, or pulmonary fibrosis?
  • Do you use a wheelchair for any daily activity or are you bedridden?
  • Have you been advised that surgery for cataracts may be required in the next 12 months?
  • Have you tested positive for HIV infection or been diagnosed with having the AIDS virus?
  • Do you have diabetes requiring more than 50 units of insulin a day?
  • In the last 2 years have you been diagnosed or treated for any form of internal cancer?
  • In the last 2 years have you been diagnosed or had treatment for heart attack, stroke, or congestive heart failure?
  • Within the past 2 years have you been treated or diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or crippling arthritis?
  • Within the last year have you been fed intravenously, or been recommended to have surgery for a heart condition or joint replacement?

You must be able to answer "NO" to all questions to qualify.

These are examples of the questions that must be answered to qualify for a Medicare supplement policy outside of the guaranteed issue and open enrollment period.
