Factors that Influence Medicare Supplement Rates

There are several factors that contribute to the price of a Florida Medicare Supplement Insurance policy, they are: age of the applicant, gender, zip-code of residence, and tobacco use. Each insurance company has its own formula for determining the price of their Medicare supplements. While the benefits of each Medicare supplement plan remain the same at each insurance company the prices differ. Each insurance company also has a different formula for increasing Medicare Supplement Rates. (Yes, your Medicare Supplement Rate will increase each year at every company) Most companies have an average rate increase of between 4% and 8%. This is due to changes in Medicare and healthcare costs.

The first and most important factor in the price of a Medicare Supplement policy is the age of the applicant. A 65 year old also has the lowest rate for a supplement policy. There are two ways an insurance company can use age in their rate calculation, they are: Issue Age Policy and Attained Age Policy. Issue Age is the best way for a supplement rate to be calculated, issue age means if the policy is written to a 65 year old man then the insured will always pay the rate of a 65 year old man. In contrast an attained age policy is described as a policy written to a 65 year old man that will pay the rate of a 65 year old in year one and the next year upon turning 66 will pay the rate of a 66 year old man. We only recommend you purchase an issue age policy.

Gender and tobacco use of the insured affects the price charged for a supplemental insurance policy to Medicare. These are typical factors affecting the price of health and life insurance products and affect the price in a typical way, with men and smokers paying a higher rate than women and non-smokers. These are factors that are uniform across most insurance companies.

The third and final factor used in the pricing of a Medicare supplement is the residential address of the insured. This address is where you pay your taxes, if you live in Michigan for 5 months of the year and Florida for 7 then you need to have a Florida Medicare supplement policy. Florida has some of the highest Medicare supplement rates in the nation. Medicare supplement rates are generally higher in more populated areas and lower in more rural areas. Some insurance companies, such as another insurance company Medicare Supplement have rates defined by zip-code while companies like a insurance company have Florida divided into 4 separate areas each with different rates.
